This study aims to identify the approval mechanism of platform narratives by analyzing which narrative structures are repeatedly selected and reproduced within the Netflix platform environment, focusing on Korean original series produced and released on Netflix. To this end, this study examines 72 Korean original series exclusively produced and distributed by Netflix from 2019 to 2025, systematically organizing their genre-combination structures and narrative patterns to analyze the narrative tendencies shaped within the platform environment.
The findings reveal that Korean Netflix original series tend to converge into three major narrative structures: tension-based narratives, hybrid genre-combination narratives, and affect-based narratives. First, tension-based narratives are structured around crime and thriller genres and are further categorized into institutional conflict, disaster/monster world-building, and individual downfall/survival types. Second, hybrid genre-combination narratives are formed by combining various genre elements upon a thriller-based tension structure, and tend to expand into three patterns: world-expansion narratives, dystopian survival narratives, and affect-integrated world-building narratives. Third, affect-based narratives center on interpersonal relationships and emotional development, and are structured into three types: romance-centered narratives, relational-expansion narratives, and growth-and-healing narratives.
These findings suggest that Korean Netflix original series are not simply the result of random genre combinations, but rather are shaped by specific narrative structures that are repeatedly approved within the platform environment. This study demonstrates that a “platform habitus” operates structurally in the selection and approval of narrative forms within the Netflix ecosystem. In this sense, narratives in the platform era are not merely the outcome of individual creative acts, but are formed through the repeated selection and reproduction of particular narrative structures within a platform-conditioned environment.
