This study analyzes how the suffering of trauma survivors becomes testimony through relationships of listening, focusing on the film Short Term 12 (2013). Set in a residential care facility for adolescents, the film depicts characters who reveal trauma caused by domestic violence through silence, fragmented utterances, and creative forms of expression. Drawing on the work of Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Dori Laub, and Judith Herman, this study examines the limitations of verbalizing trauma and the listener’s role in validating testimony.
The analysis shows that the film centers on the process through which survivors’ suffering is expressed and heard within the relational network of the shelter. First, the characters’ silences and indirect utterances demonstrate the difficulty of representing traumatic experiences in coherent language. Second, these forms of expression become testimony only when others listen and respond empathetically. Third, the film portrays survivors as reimagining their futures and restoring the rhythms of everyday life through the facility’s network of care and response. Ultimately, Short Term 12 does not reduce recovery from trauma to an individual matter but presents it as an ongoing relational process sustained by practices of speaking, listening, responding, and accompanying one another.

본 연구는 영화 <숏텀 12>(2013)를 중심으로 트라우마 생존자의 고통이 경청의 관계를 통해 증언으로 성립되는 방식을 분석한다. 영화는 청소년 보호시설을 배경으로, 가정 폭력을 경험한 인물들이 자신의 경험을 온전한 언어로 설명하지 못하면서도 침묵, 단편적 발화, 창작적 표현을 통해 상처를 드러내고 타인에게 전달하려는 과정을 보여준다. 이에 본 연구는 캐시 캐루스, 쇼샤나 펠만, 도리 라우브, 주디스 허먼의 논의를 참조하여 트라우마의 언어화가 지닌 한계, 증언을 성립시키는 청자의 역할, 그리고 관계 속에서 이루어지는 회복의 의미를 고찰한다.
분석 결과, <숏텀 12>는 트라우마를 과거 사건의 직접적 재현으로 제시하지 않고 생존자의 고통이 보호시설의 관계망 안에서 말해지고 경청되는 과정에 주목함을 확인하였다. 첫째, 영화 속 생존자들의 침묵과 우회적 발화는 트라우마 경험이 완결된 언어로 재현되기 어려우며, 다양한 표현을 통해 그 흔적이 드러날 수 있음을 보여준다. 둘째, 이러한 표현은 그 자체로 완결된 것이 아니라 타자의 공감적 경청과 응답 속에서 비로소 증언으로 성립하며, 영화는 증언을 말하는 자와 듣는 자가 함께 만들어 가는 관계적 실천으로 제시한다. 셋째, 영화는 보호시설 안에서 형성되는 돌봄과 응답의 관계망을 통해 생존자들이 미래를 다시 상상하고 일상의 리듬을 회복하는 과정을 제시한다. 이를 통해 <숏텀 12>는 트라우마 회복을 개인의 문제로 축소하지 않고 말하기와 듣기, 응답과 동행을 통해 지속되는 관계적 과정으로 의미화한다.
