Abstract
This study analyzed the phenomenon of mixed English and Korean usage in K-pop lyrics across generations from a linguistic aesthetics perspective. It also comprehensively analyzed the motivations, methods, and changes in aesthetic evolution, as well as the linguistic, emotional, and cultural shifts in lyrics. First, through a literature review of linguistic aesthetics, a linguistic analysis code for analyzing K-pop was derived. Furthermore, a rhythmic archetype analysis typology was proposed, which is a prototypical pattern of lyric rhythm combinations characterized by a consistent structure of syllable-based rhythm, hook repetition, and stress placement that induces listeners' anticipation, expectation, and addiction. Next, four linguistic aesthetic analysis codes—rhythm, emotion, identity, and existential function—and five rhythmic archetypes—climax wave, rhythmic ups and downs, transition curve, hook cycle, and hook fade—were utilized to analyze K-pop across generations. Eight songs by lyricist Seo Seung-hee were selected for analysis as case studies. As generations progressed, the proportion of English used in K-Pop lyrics increased. However, while the emotional (E) code decreased sharply, the rhythmic (R) code rapidly increased, and the identity (B) and existential meaning (P) codes were stably secured, showing a pattern of integration with all linguistic aesthetic functions by the fourth generation. The location of English use changed from section to section according to the changing characteristics of each song, and the role of the lyrics shifted from descriptive symbols to rhythmic devices that activate the senses. This transition should be understood as the formation of a unique K-Pop language that goes beyond code switching or code mixing, as English and Korean are reconstructed into a sensory language system through a single piece of music.
