This study examines three Korean women’s sports documentary films <The Ring of Life> (Lee Jin-hyuk, 2013), <Dancesports Girls> (Lee Seung-moon, 2017), and <Sandstorm> (Park Jae-min, 2024) through Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space. In this process, helper characters are understood as key agents who mediate the discipline and power structures of space in relation to female athletes. The findings are as follows.
First, <The Ring of Life> represents its conceived space as the authoritarian disciplinary space of the 21st-century gymnasium, <Dancesports Girls> as the paternalistic care structure of the club room, and <Sandstorm> as an unstable ssireum space governed by invisible capital. Second, <The Ring of Life> exposes the contradictions of its practiced space through violent training repetition oriented toward first place, <Dancesports Girls> through a forced choice between livelihood and dreams, constituting a space of sacrifice, and <Sandstorm> through the tension between female athletes as autonomous subjects on the sand ring and their subjection to gender norms in everyday life. Third, <The Ring of Life> demonstrates subjectivity and resistance within its representational space through humorous resistance and the liberation of a national representative, <Dancesports Girls> through becoming protagonists via dancesports alongside the conspicuous absence of female role models, and <Sandstorm> through the birth of female role models and the re-appropriation of ssireum space.
Spanning from 2013 to 2024, these three works enable a diachronic comparison of Korean society and demonstrate that Korean women’s sports documentary films can function as cultural content emerging at the intersections of gender, class, region, and institutions, extending far beyond mere documentary records. By examining how spatial conception, practice, and resistance intertwine, this study visualizes women’s sports spaces not as simple institutional products but as arenas of ongoing gender struggle through negotiation and re-signification. This suggests that women’s entry into sports spaces in Korean society cannot be completed by institutional permission alone, and gains meaning only when substantive spatial access and the development of sustainable female role models are achieved in tandem.

본고는 한국 여성 스포츠 다큐멘터리 영화 세 편 <링>(이진혁, 2013), <땐뽀걸즈>(이승문, 2017), <모래바람>(박재민, 2024)을 앙리 르페브르(Henri Lefebvre)의 공간 생산 이론을 바탕으로 여성 스포츠 공간이 서사적으로 어떻게 구성되고 실천되며 재의미화되는지에 대하여 분석하였다. 이 과정에서 조력자 캐릭터는 여성 운동선수와의 관계 속에서 공간의 규율과 권력 구조를 매개하는 핵심 행위자로 파악하였다. 이를 통해 도출한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, <링>은 21세기 체육관의 권위적 훈육 공간, <땐뽀걸즈>는 동아리실의 가부장적 돌봄 구조, <모래바람>은 보이지 않는 자본과 불안정한 씨름 공간으로 표상된 공간을 재현한다. 둘째, <링>은 1등을 향한 폭력적 훈련 반복, <땐뽀걸즈>는 생계와 꿈 사이의 양자택일, 희생의 실천 공간, <모래바람>은 모래판 위의 주체, 일상 속의 젠더 규범으로 실천적 공간의 모순을 드러낸다. 셋째, <링>은 해학적 저항과 해방된 국가대표, <땐뽀걸즈>는 땐뽀를 통한 주인공되기와 여성 롤모델의 공백, <모래바람>은 여성 롤모델의 탄생과 씨름 공간의 재전유로 표현된 공간에서 주체성, 저항, 재의미화를 보여준다.
2013년부터 2024년까지 한국 사회의 통시적 비교가 가능하게 하는 세 작품은 한국 여성 스포츠 다큐멘터리 영화가 단순한 기록 영상을 넘어 젠더, 계급, 지역, 제도의 교차점에서 발생하는 문화콘텐츠로 기능할 수 있음을 증명한다. 또한 공간의 설계와 실천, 저항이 맞물리는 방식을 통해 여성 스포츠의 공간이 단순히 제도의 산물이 아니라 그 안에서 끊임없이 협상되고 재의미화되는 젠더 투쟁의 장임을 가시화한다. 이는 한국 사회에서 여성이 스포츠 공간에 진입하는 방식이 제도적 허용만으로는 완결되지 않으며, 실질적인 공간 확보와 지속 가능한 여성 롤모델의 구축이 함께 이루어질 때 비로소 의미를 가진다는 점을 시사한다.
