Throughout Korea’s modern and contemporary history, the urban space of Seoul has undergone structural transformation amid urbanization and redevelopment, and most of this space have disappeared, making it genuinely difficult today to picture their former appearance. For about thirty years, Kim Ki-Chan visited the alleys around Seoul Station and left behind an extensive photographic record of the alley landscapes and the everyday lives of the people there. The World of Alleys: The Complete Photographs fills the void left by this vanished urban space. As a photographic archive, his record stands as both a historical document and a cultural asset.
This study focuses on the alley spaces and the everyday lives of the people within them as depicted in Kim Ki-Chan’sThe World of Alleys: The Complete Photographs , adopting Michel de Certeau’s concepts of strategy and tactics as its analytical lens. To apply these concepts to the photographs, tactics were indexed and analyzed using Boyatzis’s code development method together with Negative Case Analysis (NCA).
Viewed through de Certeau’s concept of tactics, the alley was appropriated in three ways: its transposition into a space of everyday life, its occupation through personal belongings, and its makeshift overcoming of constraints. Furthermore, the study confirms that the concept of tactics, previously confined to the individual dimension, extends to a collective and material dimension as well. There are, however, certain areas that tactics alone could not explain, and these areas instead reveal what has been lost from the alley. Accordingly, Kim Ki-Chan’s photographic archive is positioned as a cultural text that testifies to the vanished urban space and everyday life.

한국의 근·현대사 기간 동안 도시화와 재개발 속에서 서울의 도시공간은 구조적으로 변했고, 대부분의 공간은 사라져 오늘날 그 옛 모습을 가늠하기란 실로 어려운 일이 되었다. 김기찬은 30여 년간 서울역 일대의 골목들을 찾아 골목의 풍경과 그곳 사람들의 일상을 방대한 사진으로 남겼다. 『골목안 풍경 전집』은 사라진 도시공간의 공백을 메운다. 그의 기록은 사진 아카이브로서 역사적 사료이자 문화적 자산이다.
본 연구는 김기찬의 『골목안 풍경 전집』 속 골목 공간과 골목 안 사람들의 일상 자체에 주목하여 미셸 드 세르토의 전략/전술 개념을 분석 렌즈로 삼았다. 전략/전술 개념을 사진에 적용하기 위해 Boyatzis의 코드 개발 방법과 NCA로 전술을 지표화해 분석하였다.
드 세르토의 전술 개념을 통해 골목은 일상생활 공간으로의 치환, 사적 물건에 의한 점유, 임시방편적 제약 극복 등의 세 양상으로 전유되었다. 나아가 개인 차원에 한정되었던 전술 개념이 집합적·물질적 차원으로도 확장됨을 확인하였다. 다만 전술로 설명되지 않는 영역도 있었으며, 이는 오히려 사라진 골목을 드러낸다. 이에 김기찬의 사진 아카이브는 사라진 도시공간과 일상을 증언하는 문화 텍스트로서 자리매김한다.
